In celebration of

THE NATIONAL TEACHERS’ MONTH

We are…

 THE LUMEN

We, teachers, are the lumen

of the classroom only to the

degree that we first make

ourselves illumined.

And, if teaching is the noblest of

all professions, then the illumined

teachers are a paragon of

nobility for their courage

and strength to stand the

tide of their professional

responsibilities.

In the privacy of our hearts,

we know that we need to

rekindle that courage

and strength,

we need to rediscover our zeal for knowledge,

when we need to,

as we need to.

We have an

open access to the

Ultimate Source of all good.

And so, let’s pray for YOUTHFULNESS

and USEFULNESS.

YOUTHFULNESS AND USEFULNESS

Lord,

Give me

health of mind and body

and the agility of movement.

Give me

the strength of character,

the sharpness of memory,

and the power of lucidity.

And most specially,

give me

the depth of humility,

the virtue of teachability,

and the blessings of growth,

in knowledge and wisdom.

I desire to carry on with my work as an illumined teacher,

and to become a living expression

of you, the MASTER TEACHER.

I celebrate the love and life

of the MASTER TEACHER

in me now. Amen.

THE POWER OF SPEECH

by

Dr. Jose M. Mordeno, Jr.

The power of speech

is the greatest gift

God has ever given man.

With such power,

man thinks his way through life;

man feels for things he likes;

man speaks out his visions

and brings to fruition

the results of his action.

In the halls of the academe,

people equate speech

with voice and diction,

with rhythm and tone and pronunciation.

In more advanced pursuits,

speech becomes an articulate mission

to inform, to entertain, to convince

or take action.

In the arena of politics,

it is a common observation that

speech becomes a multi-faceted mask

for promises and deceptions;

accusations and counter-accusations,

in crescendos and decrescendos

of hoarse voices,

grating pitches and ear-splitting volumes.

But certainly, there’s more to speech

than the mouth pronounces,

announces or denounces.

There’s more to speech

than the voice intones,

in pedantic or

romantic or heroic beat.

There’s more to speech

than fills the space

between one’s ears.

                                                                                                          (an excerpt)

                                                            Welcome to…

THE OTHER SIDE OF SPEECH

by

Dr. Jose M. Mordeno, Jr.

Come. Listen.

Get in tune with earth, water,

wind and fire,

as they echo God’s ethereal choir:

Man is the king of discourse;

his speech he uses free,

to reach his own decree.

The good he praises

the bad he curses.

Whatever the case,

the effect to him returns.

While raising others,

himself he raises.
While destroying others,

himself he destroys.

So, is their really such a thing

as freedom of speech?

Take heed. Even freedom

exacts a price.

Every word we freely utter,

and every action we freely take,

to us its effects undoubtedly return,

in bounty, increased and multiplied.

Therefore, speak kindness

to receive kindness.

Talk of peace to enjoy peace.

Give love for love.

Share wealth for wealth.

Share knowledge for knowledge.

Share wisdom for wisdom.

But, as always,

Man wants more and more, doesn’t he?

So, how do we meet

such a craving for more?

The precept is simple:

Have joy to give joy

to receive more joy.

Have love to give love

to receive more love.

Have wealth to give wealth

to receive more wealth.

For having is giving

and giving is having more.

In other words, this other side of speech

which focuses on the good,

taps God’s power in man

and is the path to having more.

Such is the spiritually, the

science and the art of speech.

Think, feel, speak and live

in the kingdom of good for such is the Kingdom of God.

As the command goes:

“Seek ye first the kingdom

and all others shall be added unto you!”
